Finding God
Some of God's most profound and inspiring words are found in the book of Jeremiah: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you” (Jeremiah 29:13–14).
In our journey to connect with God, He often seeks to remind us of this powerful promise. When we face affliction, we turn to Him in fervent prayer. When we are burdened with distress, we cry out for His relief and guidance.
Yet, there are moments when all we experience is an overwhelming silence that seems to drown out every echo of our thoughts, leaving us to wonder: Is God truly listening? In those challenging times, we may find ourselves asking, “Has God abandoned me?”
But let us not forget that the silence can be a test of our faith, an invitation to seek Him with an even deeper resolve. When we seek God wholeheartedly, we can be confident that He will reveal Himself to us in His perfect timing.
The journey to find God can often feel like navigating through a thick fog of confusion and uncertainty. Many believers, including C. S. Lewis after losing his wife to cancer, have experienced a profound ache for connection, only to encounter an unsettling silence from the Divine. Lewis poignantly questioned, “What can this mean? Why does He seem to withdraw in times of trouble?”
Scripture echoes this longing, with verses that express deep cries for God’s presence: “Will the Lord reject forever? Will He never show His favor again?” (Psalm 77:7–8). The psalmist’s desperation is palpable: “O God, do not keep silent” (Psalm 83:1).
Life’s unpredictable changes—like job losses, divorces, or new beginnings—can make finding God feel daunting. Such unexpected shifts, often termed “divine interruptions,” challenge our sense of peace and evoke feelings of isolation, prompting us to ask, “Where is God?”
Yet, our emotions do not negate God’s promises. Although we may feel distant from Him, He assures us He will never abandon us (Hebrews 13:5). To find God, we can turn to Psalm 77. After expressing despair, the psalmist finds clarity, proclaiming, “I will remember the deeds of the LORD; I will meditate on all your works” (verses 11–12).
By reflecting on God’s past miracles and maintaining a prayer journal, we can nurture our faith during periods of doubt. The psalmist emphasizes the importance of immersing ourselves in Scripture, which allows us to understand God’s true nature. Engaging with His Word strengthens us and aligns our hearts with His will, preventing us from succumbing to the lies of the enemy.
Jeremiah reminds us that God can be found when we seek Him wholeheartedly. Paul reinforces this by stating that God is near to each of us: “For in Him, we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:27–28).
As we seek God daily, let us remember His mighty works and embrace the divine interruptions that shape our lives.
